Smack’s Weekend Guide to College Basketball

Smack’s Weekend Guide to College Basketball

If you wait until the conference tournaments to tune into college basketball, you’re not alone – so we’ve created a quick guide to some of this weekend's games that will be worth watching.

This weekend we’ll get to watch some of the best rivalries in the country, a true legend saying “goodbye” and regular season championships up for grabs!

UNC @ Duke: ESPN, Saturday, 6PM ET

About a month ago, Duke embarrassed UNC at home – but since, UNC is 6-1 and they’re playing some of their best basketball at just the right time.  Duke is on a seven game win streak, and will be the popular pick to win it all when brackets come out.  Unlike years before, this match up has extra drama – this will be the legendary Coach K’s last home game at Cameron Indoor.  Tickets to the game have already passed Super Bowl prices.  We’ll have to see if UNC can spoil the much-anticipated affair.

Arkansas @ Tennessee: ESPN, Saturday, 12PM ET

Arkansas and Tennessee are both ranked in the top 15, and just .5 game back from Auburn in the SEC standing.  Either of these teams could clinch a share of the regular season title if Auburn slips up this weekend when they host South Carolina.  You have to love the drama!

Kentucky @ Florida: CBS, Saturday, 2PM ET

If Florida wants to get back into the March Madness conversation, this is a must win for the Gators.  Kentucky finds themselves in a similar situation as Arkansas and Tennessee – just .5 back from a share of the regular season SEC title.  Kentucky and Florida both have a lot to play for, so we expect this game to be a nail-biter.

Texas @ Kansas: ESPN, Saturday, 4PM ET

Texas and Kansas are each capable of making a run come tournament time, but both teams are coming off tough losses.  Kansas can clinch a share of the Big 12 title with a win, but we know Texas will be looking to play spoiler.

USC @ UCLA: ESPN, Saturday, 10PM ET

These Los Angeles based rivals are both capable of cutting down the nets this year.  If you’re staying up late Saturday night, this matchup should be a good one.

Michigan @ Ohio State: FOX, Sunday, 12:30PM ET

Michigan needs this win to keep any hope of making the Big Dance alive.  Meanwhile, Ohio State is in and they’re just looking to have some fun and end Michigan’s season.  This is one of college sports best rivalries, so no matter the outcome, this’ll be a good one to watch.

      We're Talking About Practice

College basketball season is almost upon us. That means it's time for the University of Kentucky to make another one-and-done run at the men's national title. And ESPNU was allllllll over it with a national cable broadcast of ... practice. Let us repeat that, just so we're clear: ESPNU carried live coverage of the University of Kentucky's men's basketball practice over the weekend. And a Louisville newspaper wrote an analysis of said broadcast/practice: Takeaways from UK's Live-TV Practice. If it was not apparent before, it is certainly beyond official now: The ESPN family of networks has WAY too much time on its hands. Because, seriously. We're talking about practice. University of Kentucky men's basketball practice, sure. But it was practice. Not a game. PRACTICE. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d29VsG35DQM]
