Retailers with a sense of humor might find the perfect manufacturing partner in Smack Apparel (www.smackapparel.com), a t-shirt maker with a decidedly twisted take on the sports world. "We're different from anyone out there," says owner and president Wayne Curtiss. "We look at sporting events and rivalries, and put our own unique spin on them. We do what we do because it’s a blast."
Smack opened for business in 1998, and has been showing impressive growth every year since then. In fact, Curtiss reports a 25% increase in sales in 2004 alone. He attributes this to a number of factors. Smack fashions feature vibrant colors and striking artwork and graphics. The line is priced right—$17.99 for sizes small through XL, and $19.99 for XXL-XXXL. Turnaround is also excellent.
"We keep our long-term t-shirts in stock," explains Curtiss. "Most orders ship the same day, others within two to three days. Smack is very much a hands-on company. We take quality and customer service very personally."
The #1 factor is Smack's popularity is probably it's knack for knowing the pulse of sports fans. Whether it's a t-shirt poking fun at Steve Spurrier or one sticking it to Yankee supporters for the team's collapse against the Red Sox, Curtiss and his staff create looks and slogans that get noticed. Some of the company's best sellers are fashions that celebrate college rivalries like Florida-Georgia and Texas-Oklahoma. But timely t-shirts, such as the latest Boston offering ("Hey New York...Who's Your Daddy Now?"), also do extremely well.
Curtiss says Smack will return to The Super Show in 2005, in a 20-foot booth, twice the size of past years. The company is situated in the Licensed Apparel, though Curtiss points out that Smack uses only team colors, not logos.
"I always laugh when I hear someone talking about next year’s line," says Curtiss. "At Smack, we’ll show you tomorrow’s line."
