Perhaps more than anyone, Wayne Curtiss was sorry to see Steve Spurrier step down as Florida's football coach. He said T-shirt sales for his Smack Apparel business just haven't been the same with Ron Zook pacing The Swamp.
But by capitalizing on Zook's recent run-in with a fraternity, Curtiss believe his "Ron Zook for Frat House President" shirts could be a big seller.
Curtiss got into the T-shirt biz in 1998 with a "Will Rogers Never Met Steve Spurrier" shirt, which was immensely popular around the SEC and, of course, in Tallahassee.
When Florida mistakenly put a crocodile on the cover of its 2003 football media guide, Curtiss sold a lot of "There's a New Mascot in Town" T-shirts, too. But the early response to the Zook shirts has been greater for his Tampa company, which sells shirts nationwide and did $1.5 million in business last year. A 1984 Florida State grad, he's even poked fun at the Seminoles when the opportunity arises.
"My wife isn't after me to get a real job any more," he said.
